Rapport

Pronounced rap-ore

In my opinion, rapport is the single most important principle of hypnosis. Success or failure can rely solely on whether or not the hypnotist gainned enough rapport with the client. I also feel as though the 30/30/30/10 idea needs to be adjusted for those that are able to easily gain more rapport with other people. I believe that certain people can significantly increase their success rate by their ability to gain rapport with the client. So, what is this mysterious rapport?

Rapport is simply the relationship you build witht he client. Basically, it is the trust that the client builds over time with you. If they trust you, they will have no problem going into trance and talking about their problems.

This basic idea can be seen every day. Who are the most successful salemen? The people with the most charisma and charming. Salesmen work very hard to gain a rapport with people by finding things to talk about that is of interest to the person they are trying to sell something to. I hear it all the time. A person goes into the store and the salesman walks up and starts to talk to them. Before they know it, they have bought things that they didn'treally need.

The salesperson gainned enough rapport and effectively threw out the suggestions that the person took. It has happened to me and probably everyone. Rapport is the most powerful tool of the hypnotist.

Magic Words

During a class with my peers, a technique was brought up by a man that seems to be an interesting way to ease someone into trance. I noticed later that I actually used this technique without knowing that I was doing it.

What is it? Just say, "I need your help." Asking someone for help gives them all the control and creates an instant rapport.

Future Pacing

Future pacing is a very wonderful tool that a hypnotist can use in helping a client. It is also very simple.

Put them into trance.

Tell them to imagine how their life will be after they solved their problem and were no longer plagued by it.

Ask them to dwell for a minute and bask in how wonderful they feel.

Then have them look back to the moment of now and notice how the rest of their life aligns itself to the point of success.

Ask them how it made them feel.

Who did that to them? Not the hypnotist. It is amazing noticing the power of their mind!

Formulating Suggestions

I have noticed recently in some attempts to deliver some suggestions that many people, even after being trained, still deliver improper suggestions. For those that don't know, a suggestion is a type of specifically formulated statement used by hypnotist to be delivered into the unconcious mind.

A few rules that very important yet are forgotten are:

1. Use positive statements. Never tell someone they are now a non-smoker. A person's unconcious mind will drop out the negative. What would their unconcious hear from the statement above? You are now a smoker. A better suggestion would be, "You are a wonderful auir breathing mammal free from the grips of cigarettes prventing your lungs from doing their perfect work."

2. Stay in present tense. This is something very easily forgotten. The hypnotist usually is helping a person work toward a goal. They can forget themselves and state that they are working towards a goal. Alot of the time, they will say, "You will feel this way." The correct way to say it is, "You are feeling this way." The reasoning is that sure a furture tense suggestion could work but it doesn't give instant results and no one knows when it will happen.

3. Be specific. This is more for communication purposes. If you aren't specific with your suggestions, some resultsmay be lost due the suggestion being vague. You might even get some undesired results!

4. Use time as much as possible. Tell the person when it is happening and for how long. An example would be, "You are feeling very confident more and more each and every day, now and forever." That suggestion tell them what is going on and and leave room for improvement each and every day.

Another good thing to do when using suggestions that I have found to be very useful is afirmations. While a person is in trance, formulate the suggestion using "I am". Tell them to repeate in their mind over and over while you deliver it. An example of an affirmation would be, "I am learning more efficiently each and every day."

Formulaing suggestions is more important than most people think. Pay very close attention while delivering suggestions because the better you do it, the greater the affects they will have.

Eye Catalepsy Induction

Here is another simple induction technique. Again I recommend not trying any techniques without formal hypnosis training.

This technique can be performed while the subject is sitting or standing. Bold words are words to be emphasized while speaking.

"Close your eyes."

"Relax the eye muscles around your eyes. Relax them to the point where they Just won't work."

"Relax your eye muscles to the point where they just won't work. And when you are sure your eyes are completely relaxed, test them and find that you have been completely successfull. Test them and find that the harder you try to open your eyes, the tighter they lock. Allow it to happen, want it to happen, will it to happen."

Now watch for them to test and as soon as you see a physicall sign of them testing say, "And now forget all about them and send that feeling of relaxation down your entire body. And good. And excellent."

This technique serves two purposes. First, it induces them to go into a hypnotic trance. Second, it gives them proof that they achieved that trance. When someone finds they can't open their eyes, they have physical proof they were in trance. Now some people's eyes will pop open when they are asked to test their eyes. That is ok. Don't seem flustered. Praise them for showing you that their eyes work, but tell them that it wasn't the point of the exercise. Tell them that they were testing for their eyes not to work and do it all over again.

Placebo Effect?

I had a conversation with a disgruntled hypnosis client yesterday that brought up an important idea. She told me that hypnosis was a bunch of bull and that it actually had no real world application. She had come to quit smoking and still had the cravings to smoke so decided that there was nothing to hypnosis that she couldn't do herself.

Most people forget, even after being hypnotized several times, that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.So in essence, every hypnosis client is changing themselves and could do some of these things without the help of me. However, one important piece of information is left out. That is the fact that hypnosis doesn't create change in the concious mind. It works directly with the unconcious mind.

People don't realize what benefit change in the unconcious mind compared to the concious sevres. Change in the unconcious mind will happen automatically because the unconcious mind does not include the part of the mind that deals with critical thought. The part of the mind that includes critical thought is the concious mind. So if you want to change yourself without "reprogramming" the unconcious mind, you will have to conciously think of changing all the time. It won't happen automatically.

That is all very fine. Some people can change themselves without the use of hypnosis. If you are one of those people, I praise you for being able to do so! Yet, there are people out there that are having trouble bringing about change in their lives. My job is to help them change themselves. Does this make them weaker than those who can do it without the help of hypnosis? No it doesn't. They are still changing themselves with the help of hypnosis. I would argue that the people who come to see me are very strong people because they are comfortable enough with themselves and know their problem well enough that they ask for help.

Case Study 2 - Exorcism

I witnessed something I have only heard about last night. A lady, which I will call May, came in saying she had a problem with uncontrollable anger. Of course we said we said we would help her. I didn't take this appointment due to the complexity of the situation that I haven't encountered yet. My teacher decided to work with her.

Puttting May into trancer was easy. She achieve a depth in hypnosis that was very nice. However, she reached three different stuck places during the process. May was all about fixing her problem but for some reason she was getting stuck.

The breakthrough was achieved when trying to setup a few ideomotor responses (I will write about them later.). We were only sucessfull in gettng a response from the hand but no fingers.

What do you do when you encouner that problem? You ask the part that is prevent the hand from doing it's perfect work, the reasons behind preventing a response. This is where it got interesting. Another thing you can ask is if it is a part of the subject like her nose.

That part through May disclosed that it wasn't a part of her like her nose. The next step we took was to ask what color eyes that thing that wasn't a part of May had. Black was the response. If you ever do this, and something says black, red, or green, you know you want to get rid of this being. How do you do that? There are several methods you can take. Catholics and Baptists take a very direct approach by "casting" the evil out. We don't like that approach. We prefer to ease it out the door.

We decided to have a chat with this being that inhabitted May's stomache. We found out when it entered her, it used to be human, it's name (Ben), and why it was there. We asked Ben, since he used to be human, to go back to the point of his death. He died in his middle years from a sickness. He also told us that dieing made him very angry because he really liked his body. Low and behold after he died, he took notice of a little girl who was also very angry at her mom in a grocery store about a candy bar. He saw five year old May.

Ben wasn't ready to go to the light so he took up residence in May ever since. To remove Ben, we just asked May to imagine a ray of light comming in through the top of her head and bath Ben in that light. We then asked Ben if he liked the feeling of the light. He did. We then asked him if he was ready to go to the light and start his next life. He was.

We instructed Ben to go back to look at his death to notice the life. A moment later he told us that he saw the light. It wasn't hard to get him to go. We just told him to go and to make sure that he didn't leave any residue inside May's body. He was gone a moment later.

The session only lasted about ten minutes after that. We had very speedy reaction to a NLP technique and May feels no uncontrollable anger left in her body.

Now, the question is if the entity causing bad stuff to happen in May real? No one can know for sure. It may be real or it may be a metaphor. Who am I to judge that. All I do know is that upon removing the entity from her body, she made extremely quick work out of removing her uncontrollable anger. That is all we were there to do. We aren't here to prove that entities that inhabit people's bodies are real. We are here solely to help people to make a recovery from there problems by any means necessary.

Quick Induction Technique

I recommend not trying any techniques written about in this blog without formal hypnosis training.

Dave Elman's Handshake Induction

One thing I have learned along the way with hypnosis is how fast you can put someone in trance. Here is a very quick and easy way to get people into trance:

Walk up to someone and ask them if they want to be hypnotized.

Say, "Something interesting is about to happen."

Move their hand up and down once like you are shaking their hand. While you are doing this tell them, "The first time I shake your hand, your eyes will get very tired."

Move their hand up and down one more time, "The second time I shake your hand, your eyes are going to get so tired and heavy that they will close."

Shake their hand one last time, "The last time I shake your hand, your eyes will lock shut and you won't be able to open them no matter how hard you try. Infact the harder you try, the harder they will lock. Allow it to happen. Want it to happen. Will it to happen."

Say, "Are you ready?"

Shake their hand three times while counting each shake.

After a moment, tell them to forget all about their eyes and send that feeling of relaxation down their entire body.

It is that easy. This technique can be done in about 30 seconds.

Case Study 1

The subject's name and specific have been changed for privacy.

A woman approached me after one of my hypnosis classes. Her name was June. I was getting to know her very well as time went on and she was a very interesting character. She was a practicing Bhudist but I could tell something was preventing her from achieving and inner peace.

The first thing that I noticed was a distinct finger tapping when she was in trance. One of the first thing a hypnotist learns is that when you see certain kinds of movements, something big is going on inside that person. It was the tip of the iceberg.

She came over to my house a few days later for our hypnosis session. When someone comes to you to be hypnotized for a problem, you don't just jump into putting that person into trance. You talk to them for a little while. The first thing I usually ask is, "So, what are you hear for." That way you can hear in their words the problem they want to to solve. Usually you can find out in the first 90 second what the problem is.
The rest of the time they talk is just filler for you to pick up on a few details and gain their trust.

Anyway, I asked her what she thought the finger tapping was. She replied that it was a defiance from childhood. I asked her when she thought that this defiance occured, and she thought it occured around the first grade.

I had enough information to begin the hypnosis part of the session. I took a slow approach and put her into a deep trance. I next brought her memories back to the first grade with a memory regression technique. She then told me a story of her being embarrassed in front of class by her teacher. When she went home, her father agreed with the teachers actions.

To make a long story short, this lead to a defiance against her father and the system as a whole. I found this very interesting because to show defiance to a person or idea, you point your finger at them.

Removing this problem was actually pretty easy. I memory regressed back to her first birthday. It was before she had this defiance and her thoughts were very pure. With the feelings of defiance out of her system, I had her imagine me doing some spring cleaning with every part of her body, one at a time (she liked to clean). After it was all finished, her finger tapping disappeared. It has yet to reappear. She also seems to be more free and is well on her way toward her personal enlightment through her religion!

Blog Direction

I guess I will fill you in on the direction I plan on taking this site. I plan on education principles of hypnosis, share interesting techniques, talk about hypnosis in current events, look at the history of hypnosis, share case studies, and much more. Stay tuned.

Hypnosis - The natural state

Most people don't realize hypnosis a natural state. Everyone experiences states of hypnosis several times a day. Have you ever caught yourself day dreaming where everything goes out of focus? You were in trance. Have you ever drove in your car and spaced out only to find yourself arriving at your destination without knowing how you got there? You were in trance. People even go into hypnotic trance when they are in between being awake and asleep when the lay down every night to go to sleep. Does this make you wonder at all? Hopefully it helps you realize that hypnosis isn't as scary as you originally thought.

30/30/30/10

I hear people every day tell me that they can't be hypnotized. I usually follow up by telling them that everyone can be hypnotized and everyone can see benefits from hypnosis if they are willing.

There is a guidline that most people should know when it comes to hypnosis and the success rates with the sessions. I break up the people into four groups. 30% of people see success with the first session. 30% of people take 2-6 sessions to see complete success. 30% of people take a year or more. 10% people won't change at the time of hypnosis because they don't want to change.

What this should tell you is that 60% of people see a complete success within six sessions. That is a pretty good rate of change. The slower people in the last 30% are any less smart than anyone else. There is no correlation between intellegence and the speed of success. Some people just change at different rates. I have found from personal experience that it correlates to desire.

As for the last 10%, they don't prove that not everyone can be hypnotized. They just don't have the desire to change. It just proves that I can't make anyone change. They must have the desire to change themselves.

Hypnotism in General

Hypnotism is an enigma to most people. They just see stage hypnotists seemingly make innocent volunteers do thier bidding by clucking like a chicken or dancing crazily on stage. I will admit that I was once one of those people. I was intrigued by mechanics behind it. How did this hypnotist make so many people do what they wanted?

I did what most people fail to do when they encounter something that intrigues them. I began to read as much about it as I could. The ony unfortunate part was that there was very little literature on the subject in Tennesee, where I used to live. As luck would have it, I moved to Key West into a house of a hypnotherapist. It is amazing how the universe works.

She had many volumes on the subject and I read at least nine books. The first thing I learned about hypnosis was that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I would never hypnotize anyone. That revelation might discourage some. Yet, it only intrigued me more. It also made me want to learn more because I learned that a hypnotherapist helps people help themselves.

I was actually surprised to learn how much of a benefit hypnosis could be to most people. Quit smoking, lose weight, phobias, insomnia, depression, pain managment, stress, and excessive anger are just the tip of the iceberg. Basically anything you can think of can be attended to with hypnosis. That makes it an amazingly powerful tool! My own personal journey had begun. It is time for me to share my craft with the world.
